A grand gesture
Brownsboro Hardware customer turns sweepstakes winnings into gift to Habitat for Humanity

Louisville, KY.— For Delores Baur, there’s only thing better than winning a $1,000 sweepstakes—using that $1,000 to help a family in need.

Baur, a customer of Brownsboro Hardware & Paint in Louisville, recently won the store’s Fall $1,000 Shopping Spree Sweepstakes, awarded to one lucky winner. It turns out, however that the true winner is Habitat for Humanity: while most people would use the winnings to improve their home or tool shed, Baur used her winnings to improve her community by donating her $1,000 voucher to Habitat.

Baur, a retired teacher, decided to enter the sweepstakes on somewhat of a whim, while shopping during the store’s 46th Anniversary Sale. Weeks later, Brownsboro Hardware & Paint selected her name at random. When owner Jim Lehrer called Baur to let her know she had won, he was expecting her to be pleased and surprised. He didn’t realize, however, that she had an even bigger surprise in store for him.

“It took all of 30 seconds for Mrs. Baur to ask if she could give her shopping spree to Habitat for Humanity,” Lehrer said. “What a great way to give back to the community!”

Baur says that she was motivated to give to Habitat because of a close friend who is a Habitat homeowner, and her firsthand knowledge of the organization’s mission. “I felt like this was a benefit that I could pass on,” Baur explained. “My own needs are taken care of right now, and I would rather have a community organization spend the money on essential items like nails and tools than for me to buy things like light bulbs and candles.”

Brownsboro Hardware & Paint participated in the $1,000 sweepstakes as part of its membership in the Do it Best Corp. ADpak™ program, a fully customizable advertising and merchandising program that helps the co-op’s members market their stores. Each participating store awarded a $1,000 prize to one of its customers.

Baur’s gift is just the latest example of the many ways in which Do it Best Corp., its members, its vendors, and customers have supported Habitat for Humanity since the organization was named the Do it Best Corp. cause of choice in 2004. From assisting in home builds to financial contributions and donations of product, Do it Best Corp. has helped families nationwide realize the dream of homeownership.
