Do it Best Corp. officially recognized the 40th anniversary of its Medina, Ohio, retail service center (RSC) at a celebration luncheon event on May 10.
Do it Best Corp. President and CEO Dan Starr and Vice President of Logistics Tim Miller joined current and retired Medina RSC team members and local community leaders to commemorate the anniversary. When it was built in 1977, the Medina RSC was the home improvement co-op’s first warehouse built east of its Fort Wayne headquarters, and was a significant development in its expansion into the eastern United States. It was also the largest volume distribution facility – a distinction it still holds today in terms of total number of staff and overall quantity of products shipped.
“The addition of Medina to our growing distribution channel in the late 1970s enabled us to accelerate our growth and increase the speed and accuracy to serve our growing family of independent member-owners throughout the eastern US,” Starr said. “And while the growth of this facility has certainly been fueled by technology, it’s been equally driven by our team. This milestone wouldn’t be a reality without the hard work and dedication from those who work here today, as well as from those who came before.”
Numerous capital improvements – including upgraded lighting, a conveyor system, racking and shipping lot – over the past several years have helped the Medina RSC continue to increase its productivity and efficiency. It was the first RSC to achieve an average of 40 lines per hour for a week, as well as the first to implement automation into portions of the co-op’s order fulfillment process. Overall, the construction of the Medina RSC was instrumental in guiding the development of future RSCs throughout the Do it Best Corp. logistics network.
“It’s the commitment to continuous improvement that ensures this facility and this team are driving growth while maintaining an industry-leading level of efficiency,” Miller added. “It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come as an organization over the past 40 years, and that’s to the credit of the people who have contributed so much here.”
